period piece collection

2022 - 2023

This collection of work marks the beginning of Jordan’s serious exploration into menstruation as the primary theme of her work. It combines symbols of opulence with the “disgustingness” of menstruation; what happens when luxurious objects like chandeliers are constructed from period products? Does the act of drinking wine become abject when it is out of a menstrual cup? Does the chandelier become a celebration/glorification of periods?

The intention of this body of work is to challenge the learnt idea of “uncleanliness” which is associated with periods and question why such an essential bodily process evokes so much fear, disgust and shame.

“Challenging menstrual taboos revalues the experience of menstruation by normalising it.” (Gottlieb, Alma in Palgrave Handbook of Critical Menstrual Studies)
